Reaching the Top—AGAIN |
In March of 2006, I wrote about the waterfall I love in American Basin in the San Jan Mountains of the Rockies. That waterfall has been a touchstone for me of strength and serenity. When I wrote the newsletter last year, I had just been released from the hospital after a ‘spinal event’ that left me grateful that I had memorized the waterfall because there was a real chance that I would never ascend that rocky slope to the top again.
Last week, we jeeped up the Alpine Loop back to American Basin. It was a beautiful day and exciting moment to see the trail that leads to the 14,000 ft. Handies mountain. I immediately started up the trail to ‘my’ waterfall. As we reached the base of the falls, my husband, Steve, said, “It is beautiful from here! You have reached the falls, why risk the climb to the top?” I laughed and replied, ‘Are you Kidding?” We made the ascent cautiously but steadily to the top. The difference between looking down into the waterfall and looking up is remarkable. At the base, the waterfall looks serene and lovely; at the top it is all power and ferocity. The diagonal rocks push and twist and turn the water into a torrent of white passion. Above the waterfall, all the energy in the world channels the water down the path to the steams, lakes and oceans of the world. A unique and magnificent experience it is to watch the beginning of that journey
from the top of the world.
Tears streamed down my face as I stood again at the top of the falls. Embracing the fact that all doubt was gone about me returning again and again to the top of the waterfall, I stayed long enough to soak up the energy and joy I felt, and to capture it all again in my memory so the strength and courage I find there is always with me.
