A Team and a Life SIM

Listening to Scott Simon on NPR on Saturday while he interviewed Mark Kelly who is a Commander of the Space Shuttle Endeavor, I was struck by what an advantage the pilot’s have with a trained crew and a SIMULATOR for practicing. Simon was given the opportunity to sit in the pilot’s seat the shuttle started its descent. The space module hummed with power while lights blinked and power switches shone. Two Astronauts Box and Spanky (nicknames) were co- piloting. All this gadgetry and manpower gave the Simulation the feeling of reality, as Simon made too much of a turn that almost plunged the Endeavor into the Gulf or Mexico before Mark took control.

The intention of the Simulator designers is to diabolically plot to stump the astronauts with a combination of system failures that are convincing enough to increase the pulse rate and cause stress for the crew. The outcome is that the crew practices so many of the simulated potential disasters and recoveries that the worst never happens when they are actually in space.

If you had a Simulator in your own life along with a strong team, would you have the courage to soar into new space?
