Cloudbuster Balloons

I woke this US Memorial Day to watch a loony guy with a bouquet of fabulous multicolored balloons rise to 7500 feet and float across the English Channel and over the white cliffs of Dover and land in a lettuce patch in France. I watched the site again and again, both fascinated and enchanted. Jonathan Trappe’s answer to why he did it was, “Isn’t it everyone’s dream?” he said after his flight. “Grabbing on to toy balloons and flying off into open space?”

Both a fanciful and thoughtful undertaking, his interviews confirmed that he had done his due diligence – gotten official clearance and filed a flight path. Just writing these words makes me laugh, a flight path for sitting in a wicker chair and floating off with a bunch of balloons. It was actually approved.

I remember having the dream to soar in a glider high above the earth with no engine. My four children were appalled, and refused to go to the old World War II airport with me. My husband was excited and thrilled, and wanted to be part of the adventure. Of course, I flew with an instructor, but catching a thermal and rising silently higher and higher with the birds was a glorious breathtaking moment that I have repeated and loved.

It’s time for a new adventure for me – something that takes my breath away. How about you?
