Expecting Success

At the Vancouver Olympics, the US 4-man bobsled, “Night Train,” driven by Steve Holcomb and his three member team, provided a ‘golden moment’ when the Americans won the first Gold Medal in bobsledding in over 62 years.

There is quite a story behind the stunning results. Several years ago, Geoff Bodine, a NASCAR winning driver and race car designer, learned that the US Olympic sledding teams had to raise their own money for sleds and as result were forced to buy used sleds and equipment from European manufacturers in order to race. Bodine decided to go to Lake Placid in the northern Adirondack’s to check on the bobsled equipment and training. He was disheartened to realize to what extent American bobsledding fortunes had sunk into oblivion.

He decided to combine his resources and expertise to help the US bobsledders. He raised money and decided to use the latest NASCAR design technology to build a state of the art sled for the US team. In the process, he changed the way bobsleds are designed and built all around the world.

The evolution of the Bo-Dyn sled, the “Night Train,” created the sleekest and fastest sled in the world. Without a champion who could provide the resources, passion, design facilities and expertise, the great US bobsled athletes would never have realized their dream.
