The Gift of Mentoring

Years ago, I was teaching in a small Mississippi River Delta high school. I taught English and journalism and was responsible for producing the year book and a weekly school newspaper. Being the newbie at the high school where most of the teachers had taught for years, I felt excluded and overloaded so I spent most of my ‘free’ time in my classroom working.

One of the students seemed older and more polite than most, and he volunteered to stay after school to help me. A couple of fellow teachers came to me and expressed concern. They said Daryl was a trouble maker with a couple of misdemeanor arrests, and they wanted to warn me about him. The principal also let me know that the school was simply required to ‘warehouse’ Daryl until he was eighteen, and that I would be wasting my time helping or mentoring him.

But by this point Daryl and I were a team. I was tutoring him in his school work while he was helping me keep the journalism department neat and organized. As that school year was wrapping up, Daryl was walking behind me in the classroom when he said, “Mrs. Cockerham, do you think I could be a teacher.” I answered, “Yes, Daryl you can be a wonderful teacher.” He smiled and said, “I want to graduate so I can be a teacher just like you.” That moment continues to be one of my favorite memories as a teacher. I was thrilled when he graduated the next spring. What a gift Daryl was to me!
