We live in a wonderful world full of beauty and adventure. There is no end to the adventures that we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.

Friends on Deck |
We live in the middle of a city, Dallas, Texas, with 2/3 of an acre of wooded land behind our house overlooking a creek. It was last year on a cold bleak day, when I spotted her for the first time. She is a big coyote, silver and majestic. Early this year on a lovely Saturday morning, I saw her again with a large brindled dog as her companion. I stared down at them from the deck as they looked back motionless. After a few minutes, I slipped into the house and waved frantically to my husband, Steve and our visiting grandson, Chris to join us.
We returned to find the coyote and her companion still there. After a few moments, Steve whistled softly once and then again. The handsome dog took two steps forward. It was obvious that he was very tempted to come to us. But the Coyote had no such temptation, and she turned slowly and moved away as her companion reluctantly followed. Occasionally, during my sleep, I hear a howl and know that they are still patrolling the creek and hunting in the dark.
This spring, Steve put up two new wood duck houses and for the first time an owl house. Last week when I stepped out on the deck with a cup of tea early in the morning, there she was! A big barn owl was standing on top of her new house. Stunned, I cautiously moved toward the edge of the deck and started talking to her. She glanced my way without moving an inch. I welcomed her, told her how thrilled I was that she had come, and asked her how she knew this was the owl house and not one of the wood duck houses. Before I had to leave, I told her I was looking forward to many morning conversations. She listened intently as we made a real connection. I call her Wiso (as in wise old owl) and enjoy the wonderful cooing sounds she makes that waft into our bedroom and lull me to sleep every night.
Life is so much richer when you can add some new friends. |
