Are you lucky? That is the question an article in February’s Oprah magazine explored. A London researcher has done some fascinating experiments on being lucky. As a result, Dr. Richard Wiseman says, “Luck is not a magical ability or a gift from the gods. Instead, it is a way of thinking and behavior.”

One of his experiments involved Martin and Brenda. Martin declared he was lucky while Brenda assured the researcher she definitely was not lucky. The experiment took place at a coffee shop near the University where Wiseman works.

The two, Martin and Brenda, were to go to the shop at different times on the mission of meeting some of Wiseman’s colleagues. The coffee shop was set up to give them an identical chance to be lucky. A five-dollar bill was taped to the sidewalk outside; actors were planted in the shop at different tables. One actor was a ‘millionaire’ plant.

Martin was the first one who went to the shop. He immediately spotted the $5.00 and picked it up. He entered the shop, bought coffee and sat down by the ‘millionaire’. Martin started a conversation and offered to buy a round of coffee. Within a short time the two had exchanged cards after discussing how they might do business together.

Brenda on the other hand, entered the shop without seeing the $5.00 bill, bought her coffee, sat down by the millionaire and did not engage in a conversation. Same opportunities – very different lives.

Wiseman’s research indicates that lucky people are aware of the world around them, open to chance encounters and opportunities, ‘turned out’ rather than ‘turned in’ and willing to reach out and engage with others.
