If you can’t write your message in a sentence, you can’t say it in an hour.

Get to the Point! |
How do you get to the point so people remember the messages you send? The Heath Brothers, in their terrific best seller Made to Stick, give an example of a Journalism class assignment at Standford University years ago that illustrates how important it is to bring the message to your audience/ideal clients. This exercise was one of those ‘aha’ moments that taught them a life lesson.
The professor gave them this paragraph and asked them to write the first sentence lead for the school newspaper: “Kenneth L. Peters, the principal at Beverly Hills High School, announced today that the entire faculty will travel to Sacramento next Thursday for a colloquium in new teaching methods. Among the speakers will be anthropologist Margaret Mead, college president Dr. Robert Maynard Hutchings, and California governor Edmund ‘Pat’ Brown.”
The budding journalist sat at their typewriters and pecked away at the first lead of their careers. The various leads included starting with the governor being there to when, where and why they were going. The professor collected all the various leads and scanned them quickly before he said,” The lead is: There will be no school next Thursday.
Wow! What a groundbreaking moment. That is the message that every student reading the paper wanted to hear. The ‘who, why and where’ was just additional information. That was definitely NOT the message. So the message is not about stating the facts – the message is figuring out the most important point for your readers.
What is your point in sending a message? If you are clear on that, all your messages will be memorable!! |

This is a unique course at Teachers College with a highly experiential approach, that combines face to face learning and interaction combined with teleconferencing practicums. It introduces and develops coaching skills in general and Group Coaching expertise in particular. The course is an excellent opportunity for students, coaches, executives and HR professionals to develop and hone their coaching skills for team and group coaching. Almost anyone can work with a group, but very few people can create a coaching environment for effective group interaction and results. There are three on-site meetings at Columbia Univ. in New York. The remaining meetings are virtual on-line meetings.
