In the Smoky mountains of North Carolina, Frank Bell, Chief to all the boys at Camp Mondamin (founded in 1922), watched the summer tournaments as campers competed to see who was the best sailor, rider, paddler, or swimmer. At the end of the competition, there were four winners and over a hundred disappointed kids.

From that moment, Chief knew there must be a better way. He decided - every camper needed an opportunity to be a winner and that would happen only if they competed with themselves and not against others.

As Chief and the counselors helped campers set their own personal goals at the beginning of each summer, he discovered that the boys were much more likely to try new things and embark on challenging adventures when they weren’t being compared with others.

The camp has become a model of personal achievement where individuals accomplish extraordinary things in an environment of cooperation and encouragement.

At Mondamin a young boy who struggled in school with dyslexia learned to set goals and achieve them with the help of counselors and fellow campers. In the process, he found his heart and his confidence. As a result our son, Casey, become a professional Kayaker and a national champion paddler. The Mondamin experience so influenced his life that he is now co-owner of a summer camp (Passages) and a climbing gym (Peak Experiences) in Richmond, Virginia where he makes a difference in campers’ lives.

25.5 hours – ICF Core Coaching Competencies
3 hours – Development of Coaching Practice

In this highly experiential course, participants will examine and define the role of the coach by making clear distinctions with other leadership roles in group settings.

By exploring several group coaching models including a multi-media presentation of a live group, participants will identify key criteria for designing their own group coaching model.
