A Dinosaur Named Sue |
Sue, the Dinosaur, called out to her discoverer from a rocky outcropping in the American West. Her discoverer was Sue Hendrickson, a present day Indiana Jones (paleontologist) who says, “I know it sounds crazy to say a 67 million-year-old dinosaur called me to her, but she did. It was like a magnetic pull.” It was after a flat tire that Sue and her Golden Retriever, Skywalker, wandered into that South Dakota field where she heard the dinosaur calling.
Sue Hendrickson is famous in the scientific world for what you might call a sixth sense, an uncanny ability to find amazing things. Not only did she find her namesake, the most complete Tyrannosaurs Rex ever discovered; but she has also found sunken Spanish Galleons off Cuba, prehistoric whales and dolphins in Peru, and she was on the team that found Cleopatra’s palace in submerged waters near Egypt.
How has she come to listen to and trust her instinct? She talked about this on the Oprah show and in Biography Magazine. She said that children are innately born with curiosity and a sense of mystery and wonder which they often lose as they grow up. Somehow Sue didn’t lose her curiosity and sense of knowing, as a result, she has learned to trust her instinct.
“I’ve had the luckiest life, Sue said,” I’ve been able to do everything I ever wanted.” Now thousands of kids of all ages can see her reassembled namesake, Sue, the Dinosaur, in the Chicago Field Museum. But you won’t find Sue Hendrickson there, she and Skywalker are off on their next big adventure. |
